Weller Special Reserve is a wheated bourbon, meaning it primarily uses wheat as its secondary grain instead of rye. This unique grain bill imparts a soft and smooth character to the whiskey. When savoring Weller Special Reserve, one can expect a delightful combination of sweet and savory flavors.

The nose offers inviting aromas of caramel, vanilla, and honey, accompanied by subtle hints of oak. On the palate, the whiskey reveals a velvety texture with notes of butterscotch, toffee, and toasted nuts. The flavor profile is balanced and harmonious, with a gentle spiciness that lingers on the finish. The overall experience of sipping Weller Special Reserve is one of warmth and satisfaction, making it a favorite among whiskey connoisseurs. One of the author’s favorite things about this bourbon is that is just super drinkable and pleasing. The special aspect to this bourbon is that those who are not out there tasting all different types of bourbon, almost always recognize that this entry-level bourbon is exceptional.

Why is this bourbon so damn hard to find?

While the taste of Weller Special Reserve is undeniably exceptional, its scarcity has made it a challenging bottle to find on store shelves. There are a few reasons why obtaining a bottle of this sought-after bourbon can be difficult:

  1. High Demand: Weller Special Reserve has gained significant popularity over the years, partly due to its close association with the highly acclaimed and elusive Pappy Van Winkle bourbon. Whiskey enthusiasts, collectors, and investors all vie for a chance to own a bottle, leading to a surge in demand that exceeds the available supply.
  2. Limited Production: Buffalo Trace Distillery, the producer of Weller Special Reserve, meticulously crafts each batch of this bourbon. However, they allocate only a limited number of bottles to the market, resulting in an inherent scarcity. The limited production volume contributes to the whiskey's exclusivity and desirability.
  3. Secondary Market Inflation: Due to the challenges of acquiring Weller Special Reserve through traditional retail channels, some consumers turn to the secondary market, where bottles are resold at significantly higher prices. This inflationary trend makes it even more difficult for people to purchase whiskey at its original retail price. More of the more frustrating aspects of the bourbon is that is MSRP for around $24, but on the secondary market, it is easily on the shelves (and honestly considered a fair price) for around $48 - $64. Some stores attempting (and likely succeeding) in selling it for much higher price then mentioned.
  4. Regional Availability: The distribution of Weller Special Reserve can also be geographically limited. Certain regions may have higher allocations or greater access to the whiskey, while others may see only limited quantities, further contributing to its scarcity.

Weller Special Reserve is a bourbon that embodies flavor excellence. Its tasting notes make it a highly enjoyable whiskey to savor. However, the scarcity and high demand for Weller Special Reserve present challenges to those seeking to add it to their collection. The limited production volume, regional availability, and secondary market dynamics all contribute to the difficulty of acquiring this sought-after bourbon.

For whiskey enthusiasts willing to embark on the hunt, the reward of enjoying Weller Special Reserve is well worth the effort. It is a testament to the artistry and allure of limited-edition bourbons, adding a touch of excitement and exclusivity to the world of whiskey appreciation. So, if you manage to secure a bottle of Weller Special Reserve, be prepared for a memorable and gratifying experience.
